The Global Organic Textile Standard — GOTS — is one of the most widely used certifications in fashion. It guarantees that cotton was grown without pesticides, and that fair labor practices were followed throughout the supply chain. Both matter. But GOTS has a gap that most brands don't talk about.
GOTS permits bleaching and dyeing processes that can still use harmful chemicals. The cotton arrives clean from the field — and then gets processed with the same toxic substances used on conventional fabric. The organic growing credential stays on the label. The chemical contamination doesn't.
This is why "GOTS organic cotton" on a label doesn't automatically mean the finished garment is safe against your skin.
At The Blue Suit, we go beyond GOTS by applying Cradle to Cradle® certification to our dyeing and finishing processes. Under C2C standards, harmful bleaches and dyes are prohibited at every stage — weaving, knitting, and finishing. The cotton that starts clean stays clean, all the way to the garment you wear.
